This time, the gregarious designers have taken on the task of transforming a dilapidated cottage into a welcoming income property. Infusing the lakeside estate with rustic charm and elegant modern comforts, the Scottish lads have a ball as they create the ultimate rental retreat.

Episode

1) Own to Rent

Colin and Justin are at it again. Yet, this time they are looking to purchase an investment cottage to rent out!  They meet with Realtor Rob who shows them two properties – one that is huge with tons of acreage, and one that needs quite a bit of work. The boys spot a cottage that is being sold privately right on their own lake. They also spend time with a local agent who rents out cottage to learn what renters want. Can two Scottish gents create a cottage to rent? The pressure’s on!

2) Jack…. and bill!

It’s time to jack up the cottage and create a livable downstairs space – perfect for renters. What’s not perfect is that the cost to do this is almost double! It seems that the cottage that the boys have chosen is on two levels – therefore doubling the cost. To get their minds off the cost, the boys focus on the design of their new deck…..even finding the time to recreate a ‘Flashdance’ routine.

3) What the Truck

New siding, roof, windows and deck – if that’s not enough to fill Colin and Justin’s plate….one of the boys decides to secretly purchase a truck, so that they can save money, doing their own dump runs and pick-ups. However, the car turns out to be a lemon, causing the boys nothing but aggravation. At one point, the truck even breaks down leaving the two Scots stranded on a country road. Will anything go right with this renovation?

4) Manscaping

The biggest fault with the cottage, is that there was never a clear view to the lake. Colin and Justin’s cottage needs a Brazilian. The boys hire arborists and landscapers – the ‘manscaping’ has begun. In addition to outdoor walkways, pruning and firepits, the boys set their designs on an amazing outdoor spa, complete with a hot tub and sauna…that they try to convince Randy’s crew to enter.

5) Dueling Bedrooms

Contractor Randy has a great idea – why not have Colin and Justin each design their own bedroom to save time and money. Colin’s room seems to be going swimmingly well, however, Justin’s room is nothing but trouble, due to a fireplace chimney that needs to come up through the floor. All of Justin’s stresses are all fun and games to Colin who has fun pushing all of his partner’s buttons. Justin is not a happy camper.

6) DI Why?

In order to save money, Colin and Justin become their own plumbers, learning how to install their own toilet! The boys take a crash course in toilet installation by visiting a local plumber who is installing a toilet for a sweet old lady. The boys continue the fun when they visit a local lady to learn how to make their own soap for their guest. Installing toilets and making soaps have never been this outrageous and Randy’s crew, especially the apprentice, are not amused.

7) Keep them Guesting

It’s time to create a beautiful master guest suite – complete with ensuite. But with water and electrical issues, the costs are anything but relaxing. Steve, the electrician points out that the electrical box not only has to be moved, but the entire cottage needs to be re-wired, costing the boys thousands of dollars! In addition, Randy informs the boys that all the drywall needs to be removed due to water damage – something that Colin thought they could save. So far, there are no restful nights in this room!

8) You are the Sunroom of My Life

Colin and Justin want a sunroom to increase the amount of space for their guests. However, with footings miscalculated and issues with beams and windows there are no sunny days here! The installation has proven to take much longer than the boys had scheduled and both time and money are running out! And, worse than that….their newly acquired swinging chair isn’t working out!

9) It’s All About the Basement – No Trouble

Colin and Justin start are putting a bathroom and laundry in the basement. Justin comes up with the brilliant idea that the boys can make extra money by having coin-operated washer and dryer. Colin thinks that this is a ridiculous idea. The boys go to a local Laundromat to research this cleaning business venture a bit more. Will Justin get his way with a coin-operated washer and dryer or is the entire idea just a complete ‘wash’.

10) A Guest Down Under

To accommodate more renters, Colin and Justin and putting a bedroom and living space downstairs – surrounded by cedar panelling, which is costly. To save money….DIY projects are the answer! The boys work on an amazing mirror made out of shims and Justin's idea of a hanging wall piece is fine….until he decides to wash it! The boys travel to the local thrift store and find a cool vintage record player. They also find the time to have a 1980’s style workout with the locals.

11) Take the Log Way Home

Inspired by the country, Colin and Justin look to design a log-cabin feel Bunkie. They even visit and log cutting facility and are amazed at the entire process of how logs are converted into fittings for their own Bunkie. What does not amaze the boys, is how much water has filled into the foundation for their Bunkie and how the costs keep mounting before even one log is layed into position. Will the Bunkie be a bust?

12) Life is a Banquette

It’s time to design a kitchen that can accommodate 12 renters. With a custom built banquette, the boys create a kitchen to ‘dine’ for! First off, Colin Justin demolish the cabinetry, with Justin going crazy with the old panelling. Then, the boys get an amazing kitchen banquette bench deliver, made out of original barn board. The boys also decide put together their own kitchen cabinetry….which proves not to be the greatest of ideas!

01) The Thrill of the Find!

After months of searching with friends Cherri and David for a cottage to buy together in Muskoka, it’s love at first sight when Colin and Justin discover a 4 –bedroom log home on a quiet little lake.

02) Ready, Set, Demo! (Guest Room)

Colin and Justin move into their cottage and meet with their contractor Dan to get this reno started! Dan’s plan? Start on the 2nd floor, then tackle the basement, and meet in the middle to tackle the Kitchen and Great Room. Everything has to be in keeping with his tight schedule if they’re to finish on time and on budget.

03) Out with the fake tan, and in with the 5-star glamour

Next on the plan for the work on the second floor of the cottage is Cherri and David’s bathroom. Colin and Justin know their co-owners love the idea of a spa-like bathroom, with luxurious touches reminiscent of their favorite hotels. Cherri loves a big bathtub and David really wants a separate shower. Colin and Justin have promised … but can they deliver?

Co-owners Cherri and David loved their new bathroom so Colin and Justin are confident they have carte blanche to make all the design decisions for the cottage. But they do make some unique decisions. Seriously, who takes away a bedroom at a cottage?

With the second floor of the cottage complete, it’s time to follow Dan downstairs to fully gut the basement to create the blank slate that will become the shared family room and Colin and Justin’s bedroom with ensuite bathroom. But first, that hot tub’s gotta go!

With so much work going on inside the cottage, Colin & Justin take a breather outside to soak in the view, commune with nature, remember what about Muskoka they fell in love with. Quite pleased with themselves to be on budget at this point in the reno, and only a little behind time, they envision a proper home for the hot tub, nestled into the trees as opposed to the basement!

The Muskoka Room was one of the biggest selling features of the cottage. It’s a bright, open feeling space off the lower level that really is all about bringing the outdoors, indoors. With a brilliant view to the lake, this is just the place you want to be comfortable to relax and take in the beauty of the natural surroundings.

Changing the layout of the basement allows for a larger bathroom that Colin and Justin have made ensuite to their new bedroom. With the old bathroom gone, the mould and mice dealt with, it’s time to think ‘style’ for their very own space.

10) A New little shack in the woods (Bunkie)

For most people, ‘Bunkie’ means a tiny cabin with room for bunk beds and that’s it. But Colin and Justin have a big vision and want their Bunkie to provide more than the comfort of home for visiting friends and relatives. At 650 square feet, there are huge challenges to getting their dream Bunkie onsite … have they taken on too big a project?!?

This is supposed to be the fun part! Colin and Justin love their fabrics and furnishings, some upcycling and artwork. But, with so much still to be done in the cottage, can they really get it together and furnish another 650 square feet of living space??

The boys have been looking forward to their new kitchen from the time they bought the cottage. They have a vision for a complete redesign with brilliant craftsmanship, integrated appliances – a complete transformation.

13) The end is in sight … (Great Room)

Is it true? Can we really be almost finished!! Colin and Justin had a big plan from the beginning for the Great Room, starting with embracing the view. While they love everything about every log, there’s too much wood in the living room so, the two small windows will be removed with the logs in between, to create a brilliant walkout to the deck.

1) Real Ugly Estate

Colin and Justin are at it again. This time purchasing a cottage of their own. They’ve fallen in love with the Haliburton Highlands – a part of Canada’s cottage country named after their Scottish homeland. Though, this time around, the search for the perfect property is more challenging than ever. Realtor Rob has taken the boys on a seemingly never ending tour – over 40 cottages so far! The choice comes down to 3 unique properties and the boys are left weighing the odds. Will they take the gamble on the right one? The pressure’s on!

2) All Jacked Up

Colin and Justin's cottage is on a tilt. A 'slanty shanty'. To fix this, the cottage needs to be jacked up for a new foundation to be built. All other work on the cottage comes to a standstill in order to get this done. Tensions build as the boys learn that the schedule needs to stretch – as does their budget. To maximize their time, they put their attention toward the shoreline. They remove the old, dingy dock and replace it with a newly designed one – an oasis from the construction chaos at the cottage.

3) Façade Applaud

It's time to replace the entire exterior of the cottage. Siding and windows and doors. Oh my! As Contractor Randy strips away the exteriors, Colin and Justin learn that the bones of the cottage are crumbling. This cottage needs major structural work. They begin to question whether they bought themselves a tear down and should have just started from scratch! The costs are adding up as each new problem is revealed. It’s more than they bargained for but the extra dollars pay off when the new exteriors are revealed.

4) Fit the Deck

Colin and Justin want a big deck. Their plan is to have it run around the entire cottage. At the same time a family of landscapers is doing their best to keep up with Colin and Justin’s big plans and small budget. To cut costs and make use of their surroundings, the boys incorporate a unique outdoor fire pit in to the design. After battling bad weather and a seemingly immovable boulder, the landscaping and deck build are complete.

5) A Guests Night Sleep

Tired of sleeping for weeks in a hotel, Colin and Justin want to finish their first bedroom and move into their cottage. This move may be delayed though, as they continue to change up the plans on Randy. If they can’t agree on the new plans for the guestroom, the boys will be stuck in hotel hell even longer. After demo disasters and ever-changing plans, the room gets finished with new floors and wood ceilings as well as warm, welcoming, one of a kind décor – Colin and Justin style. It’s time to move in!

6) Funkie Bunkie’

It's 'uptown bunk you up' as Colin and Justin create a new bunkie. The designs are set and the bunkie is being built offsite as Randy and the boys prep for its arrival. Though shipping this small house may require a small miracle, as the bunkie appears to be too big for their cottage road. After a rocky delivery and some unruly weather, the boys go to work on finishing the connecting deck and finding décor for this multi room space.

7) Game of Thrones

It's bathroom renovation time. Justin wants a regular toilet. Colin wants to 'go green' with a composting toilet. As they explore the options, Randy gets a disturbing surprise when they demo the room. After some stomach turning discoveries, design reigns supreme in this game of thrones!

8) Here Comes the Sunroom

Here comes the sun room but there goes the weather as the boys deal with the onset of snow! Colin and Justin’s extravagant plans for an indoor/outdoor space, that will add a full extra room to the cottage, may be stalled by unruly weather. Adding a new timber frame with state of the art windows and doors is no easy feat in these conditions. Not to mention a new roof, stone flooring and décor to bring the outdoors in. The plans for this room may be their biggest undertaking yet.

9) Be Our Guest

Colin and Justin begin transforming their second guest bedroom only to find hundreds of dead mice! Randy and the boys are met with even more gruesome discoveries in the demo stage of this room. It needs a complete overhaul so; again, they’re starting from scratch. The room is opened up with the installation of a massive window and a walk out to the wrap around deck. The closet is knocked out and new floors and wood ceiling warm up the space. The design is complete as the boys revamp local antiques and incorporate them in to the finished room.

10) To the Point

It's time to renovate Colin and Justin's master loft bedroom. It's about wood floor, wood ceilings and WOULD Colin take Randy's side for once? As plans continue to change, Randy is more frustrated than ever. After raising the roof and making room for new closets and their ensuite, the boys get custom barn doors installed that add to the wood theme. They mix and match natural materials in the décor as well and seek out the perfect cottage bed.

11) Dorm and Dormer

Before building their own ensuite overlooking the treetops, Colin and Justin take in the great outdoors of the Haliburton Highlands with a canopy tour. Meanwhile, the construction team is hard at work on plumbing, tiling and installing a luxurious new heated floor. When faced with breaking some news about the budget, Randy finds out that difficult news goes over surprisingly smoothly when the boys are distracted by Mike, the new painter. Looks like Randy has found a new addition to the team!

12) A Kitchen to Dine For

It's kitchen reno time! The plan is to knock down the dividing wall between the living room and open up the space. The demo begins and surprise – more rodents and decay. Randy powers through and the boys take off for some design inspiration. They visit the local Potter to make some one of a kind pieces, while channeling their inner Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze. Sleek cabinets and hidden appliances are installed and a custom counter top brings the rooms together. The boys reveal the finished room as they welcome their first cottage guests.

13) Living the Vida Loca

Although the end is near, the drama continues in the last room of the cottage – starting from the stairs up. Randy breaks more disappointing news to the boys and, as usual, what was set to be an easy fix, has become a major project. The living room stairs need a complete rebuild. Amongst the construction chaos, the boys get creative and find a way to repurpose a TV antennae that came with the cottage. As the reno comes to a close, Colin and Justin sit back to reflect on their journey. The fire is lit and the drinks are poured – time to relax and enjoy the fruits of their labour!
